Rep. Good Introduces Children Have Opportunities in Classrooms Everywhere Act (CHOICE)

June 4, 2021

Every student should have the opportunity to succeed

WASHINGTON Today, U.S. Representative Bob Good (VA-05) introduced the Children Have Opportunities in Classrooms Everywhere Act, or CHOICE Act. The bill would provide struggling families the choice of having federal education funds follow their students to the school of their choice or deposited into a 529 savings account.

“The re-opening school debate has unmasked growing mistrust between teachers’ unions, parents, and school officials,” said Congressman Bob Good. “COVID-19 shutdowns and efforts by teachers unions to slow the reopening of our schools have hurt families and students who have otherwise relied on public education. The CHOICE Act aims to give students and parents the ability to remove the bureaucracy tied to education funding and ensure that no student’s future falls victim to political games.”

“This legislation provides parents and students the opportunity to take control of their own academic future rather than be forced into a one size fits all solution. Every student should have the opportunity to succeed.”

"For years, many working-class families have had no choice but to send their children to whatever public school they have been zoned for, regardless of the quality of education it provides.  The past year has magnified this problem, as the Biden Administration and other Democrats have refused to open schools, choosing to follow teachers unions instead of science, preventing millions of students from returning to school in person. Congressman Good and Senator Lee’s CHOICE Act puts these students first by giving them the opportunity to decide what education option works best for them." - Garrett Bess, Vice President of Heritage Action for America

The CHOICE Act helps provide choice in education for struggling families to deposit education funds into a 529 account to follow their students in public school, private school, homeschool or other qualified educational expenses. This bill would also streamline existing federal funding into two targeted grant formulas: the concentration grant and the basic grant. School choice is supported by a majority of Americans, including a majority of Democrats.
